Room 3 News / 2nd Marking Period

Filed under: Uncategorized — ccoccia3 at 9:17 am on Wednesday, October 1, 2008

Welcome parents! We are off to a great start in our second marking period. Thank you for all of your help in preparing students for their news cast roles. They did an excellent job. We had many elaborate costumes and creative props. I could tell students practiced their roles, as they were fluent speaking news reporters and anchors!

Here are some stories, strategies, and skills we will be working on in the second marking period:

Reading: We will be reading, “The Babe and I”, “Aero and Officer Mike”, “How Animals Talk”, and “Stone Soup.” We will have a visit from the Delaware State Police and his K9 during the week we read about Officer Mike! Please remember to encourage your child to restate their answers when they are answering quetions at home.

Writing: Students just completed their personal narratives and we are going to be working on an informative five paragraph essay next. Students are learning to make their sentences come alive by getting rid of “dead” words, using vivid verbs, and varying their sentence beginnings.

Math: We will be finishing up collecting data and begin some measuring using inches, centimeters, and yards. We will also be working with story problems in addition and subtraction.

Social Studies: Students will be learning about citizenship and government. Students will understand that positions of authority carry responsibilities and should be respected. Also that elected officials are expected to represent the interest of the people who elected them.

I am looking forward to a fun and learning-filled second marking period! Remember to check each Friday for your child’s weekly report.
As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please call me, email me, send in a note, or stop in! Thank you for all of your support!
